Home is Wearing Me Down

First, let me say that I love my family. I really do, and I think anyone who knows me will attest to that. However, it seems like the adjustment from "school life" to "home life" has been especially shitty this year. My parents are treating me like that 12 year old I was nearly 10 years ago, instead of the nearly 22 year old man I am now. Also, I feel like I'm a second citizen in the house with my sister and her husband. They bend over backwards to make them happy as possible, but I'm forced to get dragged along when what I really want to do is just sit in bed till noon.

In some somewhat happier news, I'm happy to report that I got everything cleared for the radio deal this weekend. So, if you listen to the hockey games this weekend (http://www.bgrso.org)  you will hear yours truly providing the color commentary for both games. The game on Friday is at 5:05p with pre-game starting at 4:30p. I have no idea when the Saturday game is, since it depends on if we win or lose. If we win, we'll play around 8p, 8:30p. If we lose, it'll be another 5p, 5:30p game.

I hope everyone's holidays are going well, and a thank you to everyone who sent me a text on Christmas day. I leave you with a current song I'm into. It's by Matchbook Romance and it's called "Monsters."

Au revoir bitches.

Rekindling Some Past Favorites

My sleeping patterns have been fucked up this week. I've been staying up till 7am watching tv shows that I really like. I think the best investment I've made this semester is my DVR. Since Bravo has been playing a lot of the old Six Feet Under shows, I've been in heaven.

For those of you who never heard of Six Feet Under, it's a show about a family that owns a funeral home. In the first episode the father (Nathaniel) is killed when he blows through a red light and is t-boned by a bus while driving a hearse. Irony? From there, the estranged son (Nate) agrees to come back and be partners in the funeral home. Mix in the most bat shit mother ever (Ruth) and a weird, but strangely sexy daughter (Claire) and it makes a good show.

I think what I like most about the show is how it really was unlike any other dramedy on tv at its time. In fact, it's first season on HBO it won a Golden Globe for best series (unheard of in that time when network's were the main draw). It's an amazing cast that does a great job looking at the funny side of death (stop looking at me like that). Every show starts out with a scene of someone dying. An epithet is shown and the show takes over showing how that persons death is so significant to the Fisher family. While I'm sure no one cares, below is the last scene of the last episode which ran in 2005. A lot of people have looked at this as being the greatest final episode in the history of television.

The scene starts out with Nate who had died 2 episodes earlier. This will confuse you, because Nate (wearing the jogging shorts and t-shirts) makes appearances through the scene despite his death. He's a ghost and is helping to guide the family. The other white guy is Claire's brother, David. David's gay and the black guy is his husband. They adopted two brothers and they are shown in the last scene as well. Claire is driving to New York to start her new job, and I'll just let the rest of the scene do the talking:

You may have noticed a new link over on the right side. That's a link to the "Donate Life" organization (a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the education of organ and tissue transplantation). If you ever had any questions, it's a good source. It's one of the few charity/goodwill organizations I support.

Here in a few days I'll get to come home, get the presents wrapped, and enjoy break. If you're home just let me know and we'll hang out.

Blue Jackets Starting to Look Like a Hockey Team?

Could the Columbus Blue Jackets actually be playing well? The same team which had been the laughing stock of the NHL all season? It appears so. The Jackets are riding a 4 game win-streak and are 5-3 under new head coach Ken Hitchcock.5618.f.jpg

The guy seems to be the right fit (at least right now). He was fired by the Flyers earlier in the season after the team started the season 1-6-1. When Gerard Gallant started the Blue Jackets out to a 5-13-1 record, the Blue Jackets fired Gallant and brought Hitchcock on board. Ever since then, the CBJ has been stellar.

In other hockey news, BG finally picked up its first win in 10 tries against Alaska-Fairbanks. Matsumoto scored 3 goals during the weekend and Jimmy Spratt had 71 saves. Now, let me say that I'm not ready to say the Falcons are going to turn things around. I said that after the team's win against LSSU. However, to get a split against a pretty good team with the worst road trip is a success no matter how you cut it. BG will play again on December 29th and 30th at Nationwide Arena. On the 29th they'll be playing Miami with the 30th being either Minnesota-Duluth or Ohio State (depending on who wins between those two teams the night before).

Also, if you're not able to make it to the games and will be listening on the radio, you might hear a certain smartass during the color commentary. This is all reliant of course on whether I ever find out how I'm going to the game. Things aren't exactly concrete yet as I'm still waiting for an e-mail, call, anything by the guy in charge. Anyways, if you're looking for more information about the radio deal head to BGRSO.org .

With the football season winding down (minus the NFL, which has been a bit boring this year) I always turn to hockey as a good buffer until baseball starts up again. Then again, if you're in an Indians fan, you're bound to be pissed off anyways. Come to think of it, other than the Bengals it's been a shitty year to be a team Drew likes.

My apologies to any team which I root for.

It's a Good Time For Music

Let me first say, I'm usually not a Metallica fan. I outgrew that particular stage around Senior year of high school. However, I've NEVER heard a better cover than the one Metallica did of "Tuesday's Gone" which was originally performed by Lynyrd Skynrd. Thanks to the YouTube, here's that song:

I was talking to some friends who asked what kind of music I've been listening to recently. It seems like the past year or so I've really gotten into alt rock (Audioslave, Living Things, etc.). However, I've also been hitting up a lot of Cash lately too. Oh, and in case you haven't ever seen/heard Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" (originally by Nine Inch Nails), look no further (Warning: This is probably one of the most emotional music video's I've ever seen):

I'm looking to get a bigger music library, so I'm begging: give me some song/artist ideas. I'm always looking to broaden my musical horizons.

Drew Vs. The Ten Page Paper

If there's anything which a student can hang their hat on during their time at college, it's that big project that you pulled out of your ass at the last moment. In fact, it seems to be a statement of pride in classrooms as students debate the "huge project" they have in "every one" of their classes.

Tonight, I completed just that assignment.

Back in, let's go with October, I was kicked out of my group project for my Management "class" (I refer to it with " " because honestly, I knew more coming in then I did afterwards). The reason was that I missed a meeting for the group because I was suffering from my left lung scraping against sternum which caused an immense amount of pain. But I digress, I was kicked out of my group and was forced to pick from 4 VERY boring books and I picked the one which had the most controversey (I am Mr. Devil's Advocate, you know).

cinema-disneywar.jpgThe book was called DisneyWar and talks about how Michael Eisner may be the most paranoid mother fucker to ever appear on The Wonderful World of Disney. Eisner was so batshit crazy, that he hired his executives to spy on Roy Disney to make sure he wasn't talking about him behind his back.

For someone who's worked in the amusement park industry (Summer of 2003 I worked at Cedar Point as a Ride Host on Corkscrew), I found it pretty interesting because the back-stabbing at the corporate level happens to everyone from the top-down. Although, I do remember a lot more gayness at Cedar Point (Not that there's anything wrong that).

Overall, I'd give the book a 3.5 out of 5. It was interesting, but also over 500 pages. I didn't need to know how many times Eisner had turned down Pixar only to go back to it and perform fellatio for Steve Jobs so he wouldn't take his business elsewhere. One thing that I thought was absolutely hilarious, was the requirement that every employee at any Disney park is required to do one half hour shift in costume before they may start working at the park.

Overall, I still have a rough week ahead of me. I got a presentation tomorrow (maybe, I doubt I'll have time to go) and a group presentation on Thursday. After that, it's run home to get things signed to extend my lease and get ready for Finals week.

In other news, things at work are really starting to get to everyone. It seems like a select few are the only ones who give a shit while those who do are merely mocked outside of it. I feel bad for the other bosses though, as they've got some tough decisions in front of them.
